How to use Hera Tallow Face Balm & Artemis Night Serum together

Step 1: Sunrise with Hera Tallow Balm

  1. In the morning, start with a fresh face. Dampen your face with a splash of water or your favorite hydrosol. No need to strip those natural oils first thing in the morning.
  2. Take a pea-sized amount of Hera Tallow Face Balm in your fingers. A little goes a long way.
  3. Warm the balm between your fingertips until it turns into a golden silk.
  4. Gently press into your skin, and feel free to give yourself a nice facial gua sha massage while you’re at it.
  5. That's it! Continue on with the rest of your routine and your beautiful day.

  2. Apply 4–6 drops of Artemis Night Serum to your palms.
  3. Press the serum into your face and neck.
  4. Now is another good time for a gentle face massage 😉
  5. That's it! Sleep well knowing your skin is well nourished to heal and restore overnight.

FAQ

Most common questions and answers about Hera Face Balm and Artemis Night Serum.
How do I use the Hera Tallow Balm and the Artemis Night Serum together? Plus

Our favorite, simple routine is to apply Hera Tallow Balm in the morning (make sure to dampen your face first with your favorite hydrosol or rosewater). This gives you all day coverage, moisture, and a dewy glow.

Then, apply the Artemis Night Serum at night to a clean, damp face to let those oils get to work healing your skin from a day well-lived.

What makes Hera Balm different from conventional moisturizers? Plus

Our Hera Face Balm handcrafted and formulated using only a few natural ingredients. The recipe is simple because we don’t want to overload your skin with too many things at once. We chose these specific ingredients because together they provide long-lasting moisture that blends seamlessly into your skin, antioxidant support, and the all-healing power of frankincense as a bonus.

Our balm is made with tallow which is a natural humectant that locks in moisture all day without any chemicals or emulsifiers.

Hera is also formulated without any fragrances, using only the naturally occurring scent of frankincense resin to bring a bright, citrusy quality to he balm.

Why do you use tallow? Plus

We use tallow for several reasons! Tallow is a highly stable fat, unlike a lot of oils. That means that it is a lot safer to wear during the day when we are exposed to UV light from the sun, and has a lower chance of oxidizing with light, heat and time.

We also love tallow during the winter from deep, cellular nourishment and moisturizing. Tallow is rich in fatty acids, including oleic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid, which help to hydrate and moisturize. It forms a protective barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and keeping it supple.

Tallow also has anti-inflammatory properties. It contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which has anti-inflammatory properties. This can help to soothe irritated, red, or dry skin conditions.

Tallow is a source of vitamins A, D, E, and K, which provide essential nutrients for skin health. These vitamins promote cell regeneration, protect against free radical damage, and improve skin elasticity.

What is annato seed and why do you use it? Plus

Annato seeds have beneficial antioxidants that neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals, which can cause cellular damage. These antioxidant properties also help prevent the oxidation of fats and other components in food, which can extend the shelf life of your face balm.

Will the Face Balm and Night Serum clog my pores? Plus

Everyone’s skin is different. While we use low comedogenic (low pore clogging) ingredients, if you are highly prone to clogging, you may experience that with the Face Balm.

Do you use seed oils in your tallow day balm? Plus

No, seed oils are highly unstable fats. This means that under heat, light, and time— they can oxidize and release unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are what can cause skin damage. So, we exclude seed oils from our Face balm thats intended to be worn as your daytime moisturizer when you’re out living life in whatever conditions you’re in!

Now, we are not anti-seed oil! While they are unstable, they also can contain a very high amount of antioxidants that actually combat free radicals. Because of this, we use them in our Night Serum so you can enjoy the healing benefits of those oils while you sleep under the moon.

Why are there seed oils in your night serum? I thought seed oils are bad. Plus

It’s a great question that gets into the nuance of seed oils. Yes, there are a lot of issues with some seed oils, especially when it pertains to nutrition and processing. But, some seed oils (when processed properly and safely) have incredible healing and antioxidant properties. We love rosehip, pomegranate, and seabuckthorn especially.

We put these oils in our night serum because while they do have great healing potential, they are still seed oils and therefore more delicate under uv radiation (sunlight). We love to use these oils at night while we sleep, especially after a day of sunshine. It brings a whole new meaning to “beauty sleep.”

How do I apply tallow balm so it doesn't feel greasy? Plus

Great question! It’s a simple trick, but one that will last a lifetime.

Spray 3-5 spritzes of your favorite hydrosol onto your face before applying the tallow balm. This helps the tallow to seamlessly integrate into your skin without that greasy feel.

If it is still too greasy, you may just want to try a smaller amount!

Your skin should feel soft and moisturized with a light glow, but not an obvious sheen.

Can I wear Hera Face Balm under makeup? Plus

Absolutely! In fact, the tallow in the Hera Balm will create a beautiful protective barrier for your skin when wearing makeup.

Is tallow balm safe for eczema-prone or reactive skin? Plus

Yes! In fact, tallow is one of the most compatible ingredients for reactive skin. Because its fatty acid composition is incredibly similar to human sebum, it is recognized instead of rejected by your skin.

Many people who are looking for the best moisturizer for reactive skin find that conventional lotions contain hidden alcohols, synthetic preservatives, essential oils and fragrances that sting on application. Our Hera Face Balm is free from these triggers. It provides the intensive barrier repair needed to soothe the itch-scratch cycle associated with eczema and strengthens the skin’s defenses against the outside world.

With sensitive skin, we always recommend a patch test! However, most of our community reports that Rhea is the only ritual that finally "quieted" their skin's irritation.

the best tallow balm i've ever used on my face

Truly this is the best tallow balm I've ever used. It doesn't have that normal tallow smell you get with other products. It's smells fresh, nourishing, and light. Just a pleasant, not overpowering scent. Plus, my dry skin has been loving this with the dry PNW winter we've been having.

The most moisturizing skin bundle ever

Both of these products are so clearly infused with care and love, and I think the skin can feel it! The Artemis Night Serum deeply hydrates my skin as I navigate winter in the high desert air, especially after spending lots of time outside. I love the Hera Face Balm all over my body. My skin feels protected, hydrated and glowy.

I am so happy I found Rhea, it has completely transformed my skin.

I have very sensitive skin, dry yet breaks in reaction to many ingredients, and have never found ‘the miracle product’ until Rhea. The day balm is so creamy and light and leaves my skin smooth and glowing. I really appreciate that all of the products are batched to order using ingredients you could quite literally eat, now that’s true nourishment for the skin.
